"Of course, the act of hair removal on every piece of bodily real estate is almost expected. But not one’s head, especially not a woman. And when it is, it’s a subversive, marveled thing… Not even America’s sweetheart Britney Spears could make being bald popular; instead, she was pitied, psychologically evaluated and ridiculed."
—  At the Root of Beauty.” Being neurotic about losing my hair and being a man and why it’s the one cross-cultural thing that is supposed to makes us feel beautiful/confident/powerful/rich. For The Genteel.

{ Have You Met Krane? }

Look up (^) then. There’s been a continual tide in menswear that comes and goes, comes and goes. In Canada, we’re the strongest we’ve ever been. I talk to Ken Chow about his collection, his challenges, and becoming a designer for a complicated market. For The Genteel.

"Indeed, this is what Fashion Week in Toronto is, or what it has always been, and what it will continue to enforce: big, bad kids with big, brittle egos, at big shows with big audiences in little bleachers, checked off from big guest lists, ambivalent to the little kids with big talents because, omg, is that a new street style photographer? (Even though everyone knows that the only person worth being photographed by lately is Fashion magazine’s Lewis Mirrett.)"

{ Q+A: Denise Cronenberg, costume designer }

Yes, that Cronenberg. The #RPatz fans went nuts with this because, well, she dressed him in his next movie, Cosmopolis, and we talked about that + other serious costume designer-y things. For The Genteel.

{ Inspiration and the craft }

For The Genteel. Discussing the quest for inspiration as it relates to “the artist” + my own work + fashion designers + the rest of the non-visual world that doesn’t create moodboards and shit. Oh, and some talk about this men’s collection (^), inspired by Gabriel García Márquez’s Love in the Time of Cholera, a novel (!)

{ A D.I.Y. Life & The Maker Movement }

Discussing the future of all the do-it-yourself types + the big $$$ infusion that’s ruining the very spirit of the thing.

{ Q+A with L.A. artist Steven Harrington }

…chatting about the intersection of art and fashion, the nature of craft and inspiration, and his new collaboration (below) with footwear brand Generic Surplus. For The Genteel.

{ How do we feel about men in high-heeled shoes? }

History + power v. oppression + women + gender expression + sexuality + fashion + homophobia + etc

The concepts that intersect when it comes to the high-heeled shoe. Thoughts on this, the disservice of the fleeting ‘men in heels’ trends + more for latest Life, etc. at The Genteel. Also, two completely different approaches to men in heels circa now. Which one do you think is less “silly/stupid”? Think about why - if you’re reading this and a man - you wouldn’t wear heels. Exactly.

and…

The Night Shift: We could be Sheroes. My column, this week: on the wickedness of last weekend’s woman realness summits all over Toronto: fashion oligarchs, interior design queens, and Erykah Badu. The girl power in full effect. For The Grid. Then read about this band Bizzrah (^) by my musically-tasteful friend Anupa. The next Sheroes is Etta James in Feb. - yeah, you should go.

{ life, etc.: tweet me something, a.k.a. thoughts about social media v. fashion's 'other' stars v. pinterest }

For The Genteel, this week I’m talking about Twitter: how I never thought it would be a thing for me, and if I can seriously see myself using it beyond midlife. Also, there’s a fashion-y angle to it, discussing the once-silent stars now thrust into microblogging movement. So, aspiring PR-types (slash y’all who want to be Twitter-famous) here’s a fashion-y vid about DKNY’s PR gal (…who I wrote about in this…) to think on:

Oh, my Twitter you didn’t ask for? @pliving. Also, there was this thread on my Facebook of your confessions of obsession, so I also joined Pinterest. Still figuring that mess out.

{ So, this week in Toronto fashion... }

Have dinner with the Bustles, a new vintage clothing-slash-vinyl store on College, an Afrotropolis Wanderland is coming, and who will sponsor LGFW this season?
